A TIME OF RENEWAL
NOVEMBER 14, 2026

Happy Labor Day! It seems appropriate to dedicate this Community Connection to a holiday that recognizes that a healthy community is one in which workers are supported! Here are some ways in which you can honor Labor Day alongside those closest to you.
First, learn more about the day itself! If you already know the basics, dig into this article from Mental Floss that details eight fun facts you might not know, including the existence of “Labor Sunday” - an attempt by the AFL to incorporate the spiritual and educational aspects of the labor movement into the Labor Day celebration.
Second, start conversations with your friends, family, and church community about their work (either present or, if they’re retired, past). Adults spend a huge portion of their lives at work, but oftentimes even if we know what someone close to us does for a job, we don’t really know much about what they actually DO. So honor the contributions of the workers in your life by asking them questions like:
What are three things you do at your job? (daily tasks, things they’re in charge of, etc)
What are three things you love about your job? (if these are right at their fingertips, you may want to ask if their work is hiring!)
What are three things that you don’t love about your job? (if these are right at their fingertips, they may need a hug)
Third, if you know somebody who is part of a labor union, give them some extra recognition and talk with them about the role their union plays in their workplace. You might even ask them what you can do to support that work - they might have guidance on how to avoid supporting anti-union businesses, or how to act in solidarity with a specific labor action.
Finally, in addition to the above ideas, you can support workers through prayer: in the spirit of Labor Sunday, take some time to pray for dignity, rest, and justice. Express your gratitude for the gains made by the labor movement, even if there is still progress to be made.
You can share your Labor Day prayers with us on Facebook and Instagram. After that, be sure to enjoy your day off!
