Community Connection, March 15: Create a Prayerful Box
As we continue on the path towards Easter, we’d like to offer you yet another new way to deepen your prayer life. This one is a true expression of your individual spirituality: not a box full of prayers, but a prayerful box.
This idea originated on the Thank You for Praying blog, where they refer to it as a “memory box” prayer. But it can be much more than that; rather than living in your past, we encourage you to see it as a part of your ongoing conversation with God.
Starting one is simple: get a box. Think shoe box or smaller. Add mementos that represent your spiritual life - these can be overtly religious objects (a saguaro cross, a church bulletin) or objects where the spiritual connection is apparent only to you because of the role they’ve played in your life. You can also include objects that bring your prayer concerns to mind, whether they are associated with a particular person or with an issue that’s important to you. Curate your objects to spark a variety of prayers, from gratitude to intercession. And as this is already a way to make your relationship with God more tangible, we encourage you to include objects that have interesting shapes and textures - that way, when you pray with them, you can ground yourself with the way they feel in your hands.
And that’s the key to this prayerful box - that you take the things out of it and handle them! Hold them as you pray, or choose one to wear or carry in your pocket for the day, or run your hands over each item every time you add something new. Take the idea of a “memory box” in the present tense.
If you’d like to help others get started on their own prayerful box, we invite you to tell us about one of the objects you’re including in yours! You can share your object with us on Facebook or Instagram.
