Community Connection ~ May 24, 2026: A Pentecost of Connection

This year, Pentecost and Memorial Day happen to fall on the same weekend. While not unheard of, this is unusual enough to spark some curiosity about the connections between the two days. As it turns out, there are many! Both days are about remembrance. Both are about transition. Both have an association with the color red. And both invoke a strong sense of community - Memorial Day the national community, Pentecost the global community of Christians that was born on this day.
Deepening this sense of community on Pentecost is the story itself, which describes the moment when the disciples became able to speak to those assembled in their native languages, repairing the division created when the Tower of Babel fell and language shattered into pieces. This part of the story is a great reminder of how language can feel like something that separates us, when the right words can actually be a powerful connector.
In 2020, the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) found a beautiful way to illustrate this idea when they recorded the traditional Pentecost scripture passage in 21 different languages. That year, the sense of separation was tangible; this year, it’s present in different ways, but still profoundly felt. So we invite you to use their video to create a sense of connection. Play the video while reading the text, which is in English. Listen for words that sound familiar, or that help you understand what is being said even in languages you don’t speak. If there are languages you haven’t heard of, look up where they are spoken and learn a little about what life is like there. What prayers might the people who live there benefit from? Add those things to your prayer list, and as you pray, feel the connection you’ve created with those who you may never meet, who live in a place you may never visit, but who are still a part of your community.
We’d love to hear your impressions of the LWF video! Share your thoughts with us on Facebook or Instagram.
